We are looking for a Lead Backend Engineer (AI Platform & Automation) who can think independently, operate in ambiguity, influence architecture across teams, and deliver production-grade systems with confidence.

We are transitioning toward AI-native software, where agents, not humans, execute a significant portion of workflows.

This is a senior technical leadership role. You will serve as the technical backbone for backend engineering, guide system design, review critical decisions, and raise the engineering bar across the organization.

You will remain deeply hands-on, spending significant time building real systems and experimenting with AI tools that improve developer velocity and product capabilities.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

• Build scalable backend systems and APIs using Node.js, PostgreSQL, and AWS
• Design and implement AI agents capable of planning, reasoning, and executing multi-step tasks using tools and APIs
• Develop agentic workflows using LLMs, function and tool calling, and orchestration frameworks
• Spend at least 50% of your time writing high-quality production code
• Make strong architectural decisions with practical trade-offs
• Lead technical direction and set engineering standards without being a traditional manager
• Review complex PRs and help engineers sharpen their craft
• Design and refine data ingestion pipelines and large-scale data processing flows
• Use automation and AI tools to accelerate delivery and reduce repetitive work
• Optimize cost, latency, and reliability of LLM-powered features at scale
• Debug complex production issues and improve system reliability
• Document key systems, flows, and decisions for clarity and onboarding
• Collaborate closely with founders to translate product goals into robust architecture

WHO YOU ARE

• You have 7+ years of backend engineering experience with deep Node.js expertise
• You have hands-on experience building LLM-powered applications or AI agents
• You can translate ambiguous problems into production-ready systems
• You are comfortable making decisions with incomplete information
• You have strong experience with AWS, GCP, or Azure
• You have built or influenced architecture for distributed systems
• You enjoy mentoring and elevating other engineers
• You are a hands-on builder who wants to stay close to the code
• You communicate clearly and improve the quality of technical discussions
• You actively experiment with tools that increase engineering output
• You take ownership of problems and drive them to completion

BONUS SKILLS

• Familiarity with enterprise ecosystems such as SAP or SuccessFactors
• Experience in early-stage or fast-scaling startup environments
• Ability to work across multiple layers of the stack
• Experience with integrations or data-intensive applications
• Experience with agent frameworks (LangChain, LlamaIndex, Semantic Kernel, etc.)
• Experience with RAG pipelines, vector databases, or knowledge retrieval systems
• Familiarity with multi-agent systems or autonomous task execution
